The artist contributes £25,000 cash award to grassroots live spaces

The star has handed over the complete sum of his £25k award prize money to the MVT, which works to preserve the UK's small concert spaces.

Fender was given the cheque on October 16 as his new release People Watching was declared the outstanding release of the previous year.

The musician has opted to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the crucial part small stages played in his initial steps.

"I would not have achieved what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the shows I played around the North East, and further afield, when I was just getting going," remarked Sam Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these locations have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, major artists including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also participated, raising more than £100,000 on his recent tour to assist numerous local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds assisted venues that were facing imminent closure due to issues caused by floods, blazes and bereavements, as well as permit problems, court cases and sound issues.

Additional spaces obtained funding support in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The concept that funds from concerts in big venues supports the local stages, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just logical," Fender has stated.

Fender is among several artists to give his Mercury Prize prize money to worthy causes.

In the band earned the trophy in the mid-90s for their album Different Class, lead singer Jarvis Cocker stated that the group would donate their winnings to the non-profit the charity.

During 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her bounty among a few charities, such as the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also contributed a grand to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed better apparatus," the artist told the media.

Previously, the band contributed their funds to the community center that nurtured their group, alongside other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients M People contributed their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was diagnosed the disease.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," remarked artist Small. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the cake. So our success affected the lives of others."

Last week, the MVT revealed it had protected a couple of small stages in that region, by placing them under local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and the second in Bristol were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by the arts council and supporters who acquire "shares" in the properties.
