Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
