European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
