Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
