An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that night. The engineering student came up to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his full name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the courage or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York paved the way for a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
